Fluoride free water has become a popular topic in the last few years. After people became aware of the fact that the government puts it in our public water supplies, many wanted to know more about the full effects it has on our health. Some people praised fluoride for its ability to protect our teeth from decay and carry fluoride-added bottled water with them, while others pointed out that too much of it can actually harm our teeth and may have an adverse effect on our nervous system.
Flouride Exposure
Regardless of your opinion on fluoride, sometimes it seems almost impossible to do something as simple as taking a sip of water without being exposed to it. This is why I’m going to show you a list of all the bottled water brands that contain zero traces of fluoride, and a list of brands containing the highest amounts of fluoride, so you know which ones to buy when you want a fluoride free beverage. But first, let’s take a look at some of the health risks associated with fluoride exposure.
Fluoride Health Risks
One of the most common (and somewhat ironic) side effects of fluoride exposure it fluorosis, which is the permanent deformation of the teeth. It usually occurs in children during the first eight years of their life, when their permanent teeth are beginning to form. The physical deformities caused by fluorosis include staining, ranging from yellow to dark brown, irregularities in the surface of the teeth and large, noticeable pits that can form holes in the teeth.

Another side effect of fluoride exposure is its negative impact on cognitive development in children. One study conducted in China found that children who grew up in areas with high levels of fluoride in their drinking water scored, on average, considerably less on IQ tests compared to children in lower-fluoride areas. According to senior study author Philippe Grandjean, this is due to the toxic effect that fluoride has on the developing brain.
Flouride Toxicity
It has been said that the amount of fluoride that would be needed to cause extreme signs of fluoride toxicity is 2 grams in adults, but only 16 milligrams in children. “Fluoride seems to fit in with lead, mercury, and other poisons that cause chemical brain drain,” Grandjean says. “The effect of each toxicant may seem small, but the combined damage on a population scale can be serious, especially because the brain power of the next generation is crucial to all of us.”
